Ask Yourself Why
“Why” is such a great question regarding fitness. Why am I eating this food? Why am I doing this particular workout? Why am I setting these goals? Understanding why you are making certain choices really helps you to decide what is important to helping you reach your goals. Knowing the answer to “why” also let’s us determine what activities and habits are not helping us to reach our goals! Ask yourself why this week!
THINGS TO PRACTICE:
1. Food Is Fuel. I have always loved the mantra “Eat to train, don’t train to eat.” When you eat, make your goal to truly fuel your body for workouts and your active lifestyle. Don’t use your active lifestyle and workouts as an excuse to eat whatever you want. Food comes first. Ask “why” you are eating something? Is it really for fueling your workouts? If not, then chances are it is not helping you meet your goals.
2. Hydrate. Are you hydrated? Even a 2-3% drop in body weight due to dehydration can negatively impact your workouts. Hydration becomes even more critical in the heat and with longer endurance workouts. As a basic rule, drink half your body weight in ounces each day. Even better, monitor the color of your urine. Urine should be pale yellow to clear to indicate the best hydration status. If you need additional electrolytes on hot days, utilize a natural electrolyte drink such as coconut water or make your own infused water rather than choosing sugary electrolyte drinks such as gatorade. Traditional sports drinks can be utilized if you are exercising for longer than 90minutes, but make sure to choose something less processed and more natural such as Skratch products.
